Final

The dataset I chose was found here https://catalog.data.gov/dataset/electric-vehicle-population-data and was chosen due to its popularity, and its similarity to several assignments this year.

I was attempting to solve a few questions I had about electric cars. I wanted to know what automaker was making the highest number of electric vehicles, if the range the vehicles can operate in has increased, and where electric vehicles were most being used. The related works to this that inspired my choice happened to be all the mtcars plots I did this year. We focused on MPG several times and I wanted to visualize how electric cars have improved in that department as well. My technological approach was to chart out the different ranges of electric vehicles and how that number has changed over time. I like the simplicity and visual appeal of Tableau, so I used that to construct the project. I discovered that tesla has a massive domination on the electric vehicle landscape, far surpassing efforts from Nissan, Chevrolet, and Ford. I also discovered that the range the vehicles can travel has consistently improved since 2015. There were a few errors in the data itself and the ranges were entered as zero but this didn't affect the trend of the graphs. A future work that could be added to this project would be to add in the missing information from the dataset as well as possibly link this dataset with where EV charging stations have been promoted.

This graph shows both the number of cars manufactured by each Maker but also highlights which EV cars are full electric and which are plug in hybrids. As noted above Tesla has a dominant presence when it comes to EV vehicles. Toyota produces the largest number of plug-in hybrids however as Tesla exclusively produces battery powered only.

This is a scatter plot showing the range of different models each maker produces. Following a specific vehicle shows steady improvements in range each year.

These time series depicts the number of vehicles produced per year per Maker. You can see that production is trending upwards. As Tesla is the dominant producer of electric vehicles I made a graph with and without them for clarity. Some lines dip for 2024 due to the lack of complete data on them.

I used the location information to highlight where electric vehicles are being adopted and purchased most. States like California and Washington have large concentrations of EV vehicles in the state, likely due to state law promoting them. New England cities also tend to have a large concentration of them, while states in the mid west have little to none.
